Thinking about bringing a conure home? Good choice — for many Australian households they are the sweet spot among parrots: big personality in a small body, decades of companionship, and (in the right species) a noise level your neighbours will never notice. This guide covers everything we get asked about conures — real prices, how the colour mutations differ, noise levels, care and delivery — so you can choose the right bird with confidence.

The Green-Cheeked family: Australia’s favourite small parrot
Green-Cheeked Conures (Pyrrhura molinae) have become the most recommended first parrot in Australia for a simple reason: they deliver full parrot behaviour — cuddling, playing, hanging upside down, learning tricks — at a fraction of the volume of almost any other parrot. If you live in a unit, townhouse or anywhere with close neighbours, a Green Cheek is the conure to choose.
All our Green Cheeks are hand-raised with daily human contact, so they step up readily and bond fast. The mutations differ only in colour — temperament, size, noise and care are identical:
- Classic Green Cheek — the original: green body, grey-scaled chest, maroon tail. $490.
- Pineapple — sunny yellow-and-lime with a red-tinged chest; the most popular mutation we sell. $490.
- Cinnamon — soft pastel olive with a paler head; gentle looks to match the temperament. $490.
- Turquoise — cool blue-green body with slate highlights; rarely available. $490.
- High Red Factor — the collector’s bird: deep crimson flushes across the chest and face. $490.
Sun Conures: spectacular — and loud
The Sun Conure is one of the most beautiful parrots on earth, transitioning from green juvenile plumage to a blaze of orange and gold. They are affectionate, playful and intelligent. But we will be straight with you: Sun Conures are loud. Their flock call carries hundreds of metres, and they use it at sunrise and sunset. In a detached house with understanding ears, a Sun is a glorious companion. In an apartment, choose a Green Cheek instead — your neighbours will thank you, and so will the bird.
What do conures cost in Australia?
Unlike most bird dealers, we publish every price. Hand-raised Green-Cheeked Conures — all mutations — are $490. Hand-raised Sun Conures are $550. Expect to budget roughly $300–$500 more for proper setup: a quality cage (minimum 60cm wide for one bird), pellets and seed, perches and toys. Beware of significantly cheaper birds advertised on classifieds — aviary-bred, unhandled conures cost less upfront but may never tame, and unsexed, unvetted birds are a gamble hand-raised stock does not carry.
Why hand-raised matters
A hand-raised conure has been fed, handled and socialised by people from a young age. The difference is immediate: hand-raised birds step onto your finger the first week, seek out head scratches, and treat humans as flock. An unhandled aviary bird can take months of patient work to touch — and some never fully tame. Every conure we sell is vet-checked before dispatch and raised with daily handling.
Caring for your conure
- Cage: minimum 60×60cm footprint for a single Green Cheek; bigger is always better. Bar spacing under 19mm.
- Diet: quality pellets as the base, a small-parrot seed mix, plus daily fresh vegetables. Avocado, chocolate and caffeine are toxic to all parrots.
- Time: conures are flock animals — plan for at least 2 hours of out-of-cage interaction daily. A bored conure becomes a loud, feather-plucking conure.
- Enrichment: rotate chewable toys weekly; conures love shredding, foraging and hanging.
- Lifespan: 20–30 years. A conure is a long-term family member, not an impulse purchase.

Frequently asked questions
Which conure is best for an apartment?
A Green-Cheeked Conure (any mutation). They are among the quietest parrots kept in Australia. Avoid Sun Conures in units.
Do conures talk?
They can learn a handful of words in a gravelly little voice, but conures are chosen for personality and affection, not speech. For a talker, consider an Indian Ringneck or African Grey.
Are conures good with children?
Hand-raised conures are gentle and interactive — excellent family birds with supervised handling. Teach children to offer a flat hand and avoid grabbing.
One conure or two?
A single hand-raised conure bonds most strongly with you. Get two if your household is out most of the day — they will keep each other company but stay tamer if handled daily.
